Feedback is essential in every aspect of our lives. It helps us learn, grow, and become more confident. The best thing we can do for ourselves and our business is to network and create a trusted group of people in our field at various levels of success.
When choosing who to trust to give us feedback, there are a few things to consider. First, we need people who understand and are interested in our work. Family and friends are great, but only sometimes the best choice. We must choose people who are trustworthy, honest, and constructive. They also need to deliver their input in ways that align with our needs and personality. For example, a direct approach is best for some, while others may need a softer touch. We also must consider how we need to receive feedback (i.e., verbally, written, etc.).
In addition, we want to receive feedback from people at various levels in our field. For example, a beginner, or someone a few steps behind us, may point out areas they can’t follow or need more information. An expert may provide suggestions that level up our work. Someone at the same level may offer another way of looking at something or point out gaps in our work. Regardless of their experience, we can learn something.
The best way to create such a group is to network in groups and organizations. Most people will see the value in gathering such a team. After all, we learn from giving feedback to others as much as we do from receiving it ourselves.
Action steps:
- Identify at least three groups or organizations in your field, online or off.
- Join at least three and begin interacting.
- Find at least three trustworthy, honest people who provide constructive criticism in a way that aligns with your personality and are at various levels of success.
- Create a group and start sharing ideas and getting/giving feedback.
