We all face challenges, many of which leave a lasting impact on us and our lives. Exploring the event that most impacted us often uncovers our true calling, or at least one we’re passionate about. These events shape who we are and allow us to help others. Our story may comfort others experiencing something similar. Our coping mechanism or process of overcoming may be just what someone else needs. Even if we don’t share our personal experiences or teach techniques based on them, we may find truths or steps that can be used in business or life.
The exercise below assists in discovering such events. You can use it as often as necessary, but keep it to a single event each time.
Action steps:
- Set a timer for 15 minutes.
- Get ready to write non-stop for 15 minutes.
- Think about a moment that impacted you greatly.
- Write “I remember” and let the words flow naturally after that statement.
- If you get stuck, write “I remember” and keep going.
- Once your 15 minutes is up, set your journal aside for a few days.
- Revisit your journal 3-7 days later.
- Is there anything in the text that surprises you?
- Can you identify the moments that had the greatest impact on you?
- How did this event change you?
- How did you get through it or past it?
- What have you learned from this event?
- What stories, processes, or lessons can you share with or teach based on your experience?
