The idea of finding our purpose comes with a lot of weight. What happens if we choose the wrong thing? What happens if our beliefs shift over time? These are valid questions, but we can’t let them hold us back from choosing what feels right in the present moment. We can only start from where we currently are or we’ll never start at all.
After all, our purpose is going to shift. Our beliefs will change based on our experiences and as we gain more knowledge. The reason we went through the process of discovering our beliefs in What do you believe above all else? and our lessons in What have you learned? is so that we start from a place that means something to us. If we begin with what’s important to us, we aren’t as likely to have significant shifts in our purpose. Instead, chances are our purpose will expand into something more substantial, in-depth, or nuanced.
Let’s say, however, that we discover our chosen purpose is wrong or doesn’t work; in that case, we announce a change of direction. When we’re authentic and adding value, our audience will likely take the journey with us or at least wish us well. There is no wrong choice or single path. The experience and lessons learned will assist us in building in the new direction faster than we did the first time.
